Berhampur - Silk City



Berhampur, as it was known in British India, is now called as Brahmapur. Located in the eastern coastline of Ganjam District in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, Brahmapur town is famous for its silk, temples and culture. Also referred as the 'The Silk City', Berhampur has got a nickname as the 'The Dance City' after the Prince Dance Group and Harihar Das got acclaimed for performances in India's Got Talent, a television series.

Among the oldest and largest city in Orissa, Berhampur has a trade centre serving the small towns and villages of nearby area. Being involved in various businesses, most of the inhabitants of the place are self-employed. The most popular thing of the place is its intricately designed silk sarees called as Berhampuri Patta. The place is also known for handloom cloth and jeweler shops.

Located around 160 km (99 miles) south of the state capital Bhubaneswar, the Berhampur is well-networked through Air, Rail and Road transport, with the historic Berhampur Airport (Rangeilunda) located around 5 km from the main city. Its own railway station links the city to all the major cities in the country. National Highways NH-5 (Chennai – Kolkata) and NH-217 (Gopalpur – Raipur) connects the city to all the main cities of the state.
