Phulbani - its virgin forests and peaceful tribal people / rich tribal culture

Phulbani, which is proposed to be named as 'Bouddha Kandhamal', is a town located in Kandhamal District in the East Indian state of Orissa. Once known for its virgin forests and calm tribal people, Phulbani has Lord Jagannath Temple, Madikunda Chaka, Govt. College, FCI, Stadium, Govt. Hospital (Medical), Collecterate office and Gopabandhu field (Coronation Ground) to host annual events.

Among the other important places the town holds is a Barrack for Orissa Reserve Police located close to River Pila Salunki. A farm for research activities of Orissa Horticulture and research on silk moths is also situated here. You can find here a rarely diversified compilation of Guava Plants. The farm is known for producing high quality turmeric.

The heart if agriculture in the region is the River Pila Salunki, however the region never made a success with agriculture owing to water paucity here. Still, the economy of the region is largely driven by wild plants and herbs.

You can hear from the tribal folks a number of ghost tales around the River Salunki as, in the past, a host of people and cattle were killed in flood including the last major flood occurred here in the year 1981. Sudden gauss of rain water in the rainy season has been successfully preserved through the dam at Pila Salunki. You can find the dam at Pila Salunki as a nice picnic spot.

Phulbani can be approached through taxis, buses and trains from Bhubaneshwar, about 200 km away from here.
