Rourkela - Steel City (SAIL)

Rourkela, located in the Sundargarh District at the centre of a rich mineral belt, has numerous religious places where a number of devotees make a visit, each year. Surrounded by a host of hills and rivers, the destination is situated in the northwest tip of the East Indian state of Orissa.

The name 'Rourkela' refers to 'Sadri' in the local tribal language, literally meaning to 'Our Village'. An indigenous community called Raulia used to occupy the region. Independent India founded its first public sector steel plant facility in association with Germany’s private undertaking - KRUPP & DEMAG Co. One of the largest steel plants of Steel Authority of India is located here. The destination is also renowned for bearing the one of the National Institutes of Technology of India. Rourkela is ranked 14th most clean and green city in India.

Being a tourism hub in Orissa, Rourkela has a number of spots of tourist interest including a range of religious places such as Hanuman Vatika, Vedavyas, Mandira Dam, Ghoghar Temple, Khandadhar, Darjin, Maa Vaishno Devi Temple, Laxmi Narayan Mandir and many more. Located about 340 km (211 mile) north of state capital Bhubaneswar, Rourkela can be reached through the nearest airport Birsa Munda at Ranchi, 250 km away, or Rourkela Railway Station, or by road.
